Levada Do Norte to Cabo Girao
Distance: 11.5km
Duration: 2 hours 45 mins
Difficulty: Easy (until final 10 mins up a VERY steep hill)
Desirability: Beautiful, peaceful levada walk with coastal and village views. Amazing views at Cabo Girao, and when adding on another hike to Camara De Lobos it makes for an epic day out.
Description: We got a Bolt to drop us off in Boa Morte (on Cam. do Lombo da Levada) and used a route on Alltrails to get us onto the levada. Its a beautiful walk starting in a forest, passing by small settlements, and winding along the mountain side. The colours are incredible - blue sea, lush green mountains, orange terracotta roofs. As with all levada walks there is next to zero gradient. You spend long periods in the sun and long periods in the shade so we did find ourselves layering up and down accordingly. It's quite a popular route and we passed a few walking groups on the way.
What we wore
Hiking boots, shorts, technical t-shirts, sun cream. We had a long-sleeved layer with us too that we needed at points - you are quite often in the shade of the mountain and / or under the trees.
What we ate
Lunch with a view over the ocean. Bliss. We had our usual bagels & hummus with spinach leaves, cherry tomatoes & cucumber. We snacked on apples, bananas and cereal bars. Once we got to Cabo Giro we had a coffee and a slice of custard tart at the cafe.
How we felt
We loved the peace and tranquillity on this hike, plus the variety...through forests, passed villages, continuous ocean views. And the view from the skywalk at Cabo Girao is well worth the 3 euro entry fee.
