Penon de Ifach (Calpe Rock)
Distance: 4km
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: Hard
Desirability: Incredible views but you need to be sure footed and ok with heights.
Description: A really straight forward hike, route-wise, to do from Calpe. Our accommodation was a stone throw away so we walked up to the visitors centre. You need to apply for a permit online 24 hours before you plan to walk. No-one asked to see this whilst we were on the rock though. After the visitors centre there is a relatively easy stretch with a well defined path until you reach a tunnel. Once through the tunnel it gets really challenging with endless slippery rocks to overcome.
What we wore
Hiking boots, shorts, vests, plenty of sun cream. There were plenty people in trainers and jogging suits though.
What we ate
We underestimated how long this hike would take us and only had a couple of cakes (freebies from our hotel room in Alicante), some nuts, and a few crackers. Would've taken lunch if we realised how long we'd be out for.
How we felt
Surprisingly challenged! Lots of concentration required whilst scrabbling over the rocks and navigating the other walkers. The views were outstanding - we loved identifying some of the bigger Spanish mountains, eyeing them up for future hikes.
